Hitler the Truffle Eater - English

Introduction

The ‘Truffle Eater Pretty Stories and Funny Pictures’ was first published in 1933, the year Adolf Hitler became Chancellor of Germany. It is the earliest illustrated cartoon book to attack and ridicule Hitler. It is extraordinary in its analysis and understanding of the early Nazi regime.

The cartoon is loosely based on the popular German children's picture book ‘The Struwwelpeter’ by Heinrich Hoffmann, first published in 1845. It demonstrated the disastrous consequences of children misbehaving in an exaggerated way with rhymed stories and graphic illustrations.

In 1941 the 'Struwwel Hitler' another anti-Hitler cartoon was published in England with a much stronger emphasis on the original Struwwelpeter story line. By this point, three years into the Second World War, anti-German literature was widespread and it was more common to see Nazi Germany attacked in cartoons.

The 'Truffle Eater', possibly referring with its title to Hitler as a pig, was published under the pseudonym Oistros. Oistros is a greek word and can mean 'sting', 'breeze' or 'mad impulse'. The writer behind the pseudonym was Humbert Wolfe; an English poet and civil servant of a Jewish family background.

The cartoon follows the events in 1933, including the burning of the Reichstag in February. In ‘The Truffle Eater’ the author suggests that Goebbels was behind the fire and the event was used by Hitler to curtail German democracy. It also covers the infamous book-burnings and increasing anti-Semitic activities in Germany, and shows an acute observation of the sudden changes following the election of Hitler as Chancellor.

Finally, the author of the 'Truffle Eater' refers back to the year 1914 reflecting on the German Kaiser Wilhelm II as the cause for the First World War. Wolfe predicts that Europe will suffer the same fate under Germany ruled by Hitler. His prophecy would turn into reality.
