Architecture
Third Reich Architecture Volume 2 - German
Introduction
The two titles 'Construction in the New Reich' (Das Bauen im Neuen Reich) were showpiece books at the time. Each volume containing more than 200 pictures of the latest public and residential buildings, including bridges and motorways. Any construction considered an achievement was included. Hitler's favorite architects were Paul Troost, Albert Speer and Fritz Todt. Troost built the iconic buildings in Munich, including the Temples of Honor, the Leadership Building and the House of German Art. Speer designed most buildings of the Party Rally Grounds in Nuremberg and the New Chancellery in Berlin. Todt, an engineer, was in charge of the Autobahn. Official buildings were built in a monumental style. But a vernacular style was used for residential housing. The country village style was supposed to provide a feeling for tradition, healthy living and belonging. New housing developments were built in uniform patterns to create a classless society and a pre-industrial environment.
